Cisco 4400 loosing its ap's at ap reboot!

Hello!

We have an customer that has a installation with around 50 1130ap's connected to a Cisco 4404.

The system is up and running but when we restart an ap it will not connect

again to the controller! (color cycle, red orange green you know ; )

I does get ip adress and can ping gateway from tha ap's cli and so on.

We have also tried adding new ap's with "master controller" checkbox marked. (is it called that?) But with no luck!

Are you saying that access points that are currently connected to the controller can't be rebooted without them losing the controller? Or are you saying that you can't get new access points to connect?

How is the 4404 connected to the wired network? Are you using etherchanneled trunks, or are you using separate connections? Also, how many access points are currently connected?

How do new access points find the controller? Via broadcast, DHCP, OTAP, or DNS?

Sorry for all the questions, but hopefully we can lock down the problem :)

First statement is yes. we have a new access point that i will try tomorrow. (will enable "master mode" then)

The switchport the controller is connected to is unmanaged/trunkport

(the network's is strangely configured, only separated by subnetting)

There are 48 aps all in all. But now several are not connected anymore.

It feels like someone hase configured a router or som network equipment (dhcp?)between the controller and the ap's. But how could then aps work before reboot?

(they get a "good" iprange in the same subnet range)

What does the log on the ap show. Is the time on the wlc set right? If you had the ap's joined previously, then you shouldn't have an issue. Post the log from an ap.... it will help us understand what is going wrong.

Is the ap getting the correct ip address as shown in the log? 10.68.131.87

What IP Address is the management and ap-manager? If you have some ap's that are joined with the wlc and you have some that seem not to be on the wlc anymore, you can enable otap on the wlc and either reboot the ap via shutting down the power port or power cycleing the ap if you have a power injector or AC adapter (looks like it from the log). This way, the ap's can at least find the WLC by getting the mobility information from the other ap's. Make sure you disable otap after you are done.

Explain a bit more how you have the wlan setup.

Is the time on the WLC set correctly?

The time has been set from a ntp server.

The timezone information is missing though(+1)!

The ap's that connect do get the same time as the controller. the ones that dont connect or is restarted says 2002 something. Is time a sync factor of some kind?

Could be... hard set the time on the WLC and also make sure you set the timezone. See if that helps or not. Just for kicks, also make sure that under ap polices you don't have authorize AP via AAA.

Update!

Have uppdated to the newswest firmware! And have been sucsessfull with getting ap to rejoin after power outage or somthin like that.

I have recreated all wifi nets and connections after a

factory reset.

One thing that bothers me is that i cant get new ap's to join. (running master controller mode)

What kind of communicating are the ap/controler doing? unicast/broadcast/ip/udp?

controller ->

manager int: 10.23.1.40 /24

ap-manager: 10.23.1.41 /24

wifi-lan: 10.23.128.41 /17

Dhcp range for ap's

10.23.128-131.* /17

gw 10.23.128.1 (ap's can ping manager from there subnet)

dns 10.23.1.1 (and router on a stick

So final question, why dont ap get join respons frpm wlc?

Might be that you need to create another ap manager interface as an ap manager only supports 48 access points.

Try creating another and you will get more than 48 ap connected
