Using VMware for Voice Lab

Chuck Reid

Hi,

I am interested in using VMware to set up a voice lab and I have a few questions:

1) Should I use VMware workstation or VMware server, I have both available.

2) Is it possible to run more than 2 virtual machines at a time on a typical PC Server? Whats the limiting factor, memory or cpu cycles?

3) My goal is to get 4-6 virtual servers online and networked to do testing/training, CM/IPCC/Presence/Unity, how many PC style servers would I realistically need to do this? Any suggestion platform?

4) What about licensing, does Cisco have demo/learning/lab licenses availble that engineers can purchase?

Thanks for any info!

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

Sorry for the delay (I never saw the follow-up question)

The software for a Unity demonstration system can be ordered on line. The orderable demonstration system is the easiest way to get an entire set of the discs, including third-party software (except Windows 2000 Server). It is available at https://tools.cisco.com/qtc/config/jsp/configureHome.jsp. The part number is UNITY4-DEMO-10USR.

Here is the related Unity 5.x info;

A demonstration system uses one of two different license files:

•Default license file (available on the Cisco Unity server).

•Time-limited license file (must be ordered from Cisco).

Limits on a Cisco Unity Demonstration System

Depending on the type of license file you use-Default License File or Time-Limited License File-the Cisco Unity demonstration system will have the limits listed below.

Default License File

10 languages

2 RealSpeak text-to-speech (TTS) sessions

10 mailboxes for one of the following subscriber types:

-Unified Messaging (UM) subscribers

-Voice Messaging (VM) subscribers

10 Cisco Unity Inbox subscribers

2 voice ports

2 voice-recognition sessions

30-second limit for messages

The ability to integrate with any supported phone system

Time-Limited License File

The time-limited license enables either Unified Messaging (UM) or Voice Messaging (VM) with the following limitations:

UM feature package

-50 UM subscribers with 16 sessions

-2 RealSpeak text-to-speech (TTS) sessions

-2 languages

-AMIS

-16 voice ports

-2 voice-recognition sessions

VM feature package

-50 VM subscribers with 16 sessions

-2 RealSpeak text-to-speech (TTS) sessions

-2 languages

-25 Cisco Unity Inbox users

-16 voice ports

-2 voice-recognition sessions

The time-limited license includes the following additional limitations:

Time limit (after which Cisco Unity stops handling calls)

-60 days

-90 days

Only one license file on the Cisco Unity server is permitted

Non-renewable

Locked to the specific MAC address of the network interface card (NIC) on the Cisco Unity server

The ability to integrate with any supported phone system

Hope this helps!

1) both works

2) u can run as much as u want.. but this will need more RAM and CPU as well

for two VM u need at leat 1.5 to 2 G og RAM !!

3)if u have a server with high qualifications like ram and cpu u can run it

4) i think there is a lab testing licensing not sure

if helpful Rate

Hi,

As per previous comments, any high spec PC/server will do for this.

Personally I run VMWare workstation 6 for each of these servers:

SQL

CCM6

TTS & ASR

UCCX 5.0

They work fine on a standard PC (2GHz) plus 4GB of RAM but would work even better on a dual/quad core machine with double the RAM!

You can then install IPC's and Dynamips etc. to extend the lab if needed.

Hi,

So, can anyone talk more about licensing for a home lab, I havn't run across anything yet.

If I have a quad core PC server with 4 gig ram I should be able to run 4 Vm servers at the same time?

Thanks,

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

Yeah, the PC should be fine running 4 VM's.

You will have to source your own licenses for the CallManagers and UCCX etc, but certain websites have pre-configured VMWare's which you can use...

Hi,

If you know of any of these websites, let me know.

Thanks,

Chuck

Try this one Chuck. You will have to register but the forums are particularly useful and it's possible to obtain a wide variety of things including study material etc.
