When assigning dn to 8 cti ports do they need to match the phones directory numbers?Are they chosen arbitrarily?Do they need to be unique?

You need to define the numbers and they should be sequential.
Check out the SRND guide for whatever version Calmanager you are using.

And they need to be unique of course. The CTI Route Point too.
