while attempting to upgrade 8.3 the copy appears to go but then I get file not found a show dir disk0: has a 0 size with an unrecognizable file name. Any thoughts?

Happened to me while I tried to upgrade the standby in a active/standby pair.
I ended up going into ROMMON mode and setting an IP on the management interface for the network it was on. I then set the TFTP and Filename parameters and did a TFTP boot of the OS. Once the system was up, you have to re-TFTP over the OS as it is not saved on disk0:
Once you get into ROMMON, do a question mark to get a list of the commands you can set. It will be obvious on what to do.

Which tftp server are you using? Try tftpdnld32 or Filezilla (FTP). Both are free.

I have and use both. When I did the above, I used tftpd32

Try re download the image from the Cisco website. Try to format the flash before you put the image (But be careful with this, you could even spoil what you have now).
