when using non cisco switches for Ip phones

such as HP or 3com, I assume you can have a voice vlan as well as a data vlan on the same port, like the cisco switches?

Do the phones register o.k as if they were

cisco switch?

from my very limited experience with non-cisco switches and this, the phones do register fine however you need to manually set the vlans on the phones and there is no CDP on these non-cisco switches.

Note: im assuming you are using two vlans and using switchport voice vlan "X"

The above post is correct. All the QoS, etc, etc will have to be setup manually as well as hard-coding the voice VLAN on the phone becuase you will not have the CDP information being passed back and forth to establish the Voice VLAN automatically.

Hope this helps,

Steve
