just a few words in addition:

STP is an OSI L2 protocol that manages L2 link redundancy in a population of LAN switches.

STP target is to avoid at every time that bridging loops can form.

LAN switches send out their ports and receive BPDU frames so they become aware of the presence of each other.

STP builds a loop-free tree topology rooted at the device that has become root bridge.

In general it is not suggested to disable STP on switches.

IEEE STP 802.1D

Cisco PVST+ (Per vlan spanning tree)

Rapid STP 802.1W

Multiple Spanning Tree MST 802.1s
