I have a question on upgrading the IOS on my 7206VXR, mostly about the boot loader.
What's the significance of updating the boot loader and do I Have to upgrade it if I'm upgrading the IOS?
Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software
IOS (tm) 7200 Software (C7200-IK8S-M), Version 12.2(24), RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 12.2(4r)B2, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)
BOOTLDR: 7200 Software (C7200-KBOOT-M), Version 12.3(2)T1, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)
I have 3 routers with the exact same versions. I have a scheduled maintenance window coming up to replace our core backbone switches and would like to update the IOS on these guys at the same time. The version I'm looking at is 12.4-6T11 (c7200-spservicesk9-mz.124-6.T11)
Will I need to update the boot loader too? Is it recommended? Thanks.
BOOTLDR image upgrade is necessary for new hardware support;
- More memory from the previous maximum
- Support for new Card/Module/Port
You don't need to upgrade BOOTLDR image when you are upgrading IOS image.
However, it doesn't harm to ask your vendor (Cisco Partner) who sold you software/hardware maintenance.
