Is there a network traffic stoppage/downtime if I switch vlans

I have a quick question.

I have a switch that is in production that handles our ESX server environment. I need to change the Vlan the ESX servers are connected to. If I change the switch ports with the command int range Gi0/8-17, switchport mode access vlan 52. then what sort of downtime and/or loss traffic can I expect if I switch it on the fly?

thanks!

Hello Kendrich,

up to 50 seconds the time for STP to converge again but you need to verify that L3 communication is still possible, are the servers going to change IP address or they will keep the same ?

Hope to help

Giuseppe

First I think you need the command "switchport acess vlan 52. But that's not the topic ;-)..

Like Guiseppe said, when the routing or L3 connection is possible. Do you have portfast enable? Or is it an trunk which is normaly user by ESX I think. When it is an access port and portfast is enable i think it would work fast. 50 sec. are only on normal stp enviroments.
