What is the maximum number of sub-interfaces on the 6500? Ive seen several different answers, some say 1000 per port or 2000 per module. Other says its 1024 per chassis. Is the limitation due to type of supervisor?

Hello Joe,
the limit is at whole device level and is given by the size of the IDB table: each interface has its own entry on it.
The limit can change with the supervisor model and the IOS version.
the following link to the C6500 architecture can be useful
comparison between IOS Native and Hybrid
Hope to help

Im running a SUPII on a 6509. Im trying to determine the number of subinteraces I can run.

Hello Joe,
the IDB table contains the interface descriptor blocks. the IDB contains all the info related to the interface object.
From a practical point of view:
one entry for each physical port (L2 or L3)
one for each L2 Vlan
one for each L3 SVI vlan
I would be conservative and I would say 1024 for the whole platform with SUP2.
I tried to look for a declared number, I remember there was another thread about this.
Hope to help
Giuseppe
