thanks v much Sushil, I guess I now have to upgrade to the 2 major release following 7.0(8)and then to 7.2..?

If the IOS works the same as routers, can you confirm this is the process, I only bought the ASA two days ago and Cisco won't support me because my SmartNET hasn't arrived yet!

You can directly upgrade to 7.2.4.

Here are the upgrade steps:

Download the asa software (asa724-k8.bin)from here:

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/asa

Download the TFTP server from here:

http://tftpd32.jounin.net/

-Unzip the TFTP server on a computer on the network

-copy the asa724-k8.bin file in the same extracted folder

-doubleclick on tftpd32.exe

-When you click on the 'show dir' button on the tftp server, the asa724-k8.bin file should be one of the listed files

-in the configuration terminal mode of the asa first ping the tftp server computer's ip address (you should be able to get ping responses)

-enter the command 'copy tftp flash'

-enter the ip address of the tftp server computer (press enter)and then enter asa724-k8.bin as the file name (press enter)

-it will ask you 'do you wish to proceed' - press 'y' for yes

-once you are back to the prompt issue the command

You would see asa724-k8.bin file in the list.

asa(config)# sh run boot

boot system flash:/asa802-k8.bin

This command tells us which file is in the boot system.

We need to change that to 803.bin.

That can be done by the command,

asa(config)#boot system flash:/asa724-k8.bin

'reload' to reboot the asa so that the new software version takes affect

-when the asa boots up again, issue 'show version' command to confirm if the new software is now running on the asa.

excellent, completely forgot about the appended bin file in boot, so pointed to 803, having reloaded 7.11/7.12 etc all the way up to 7.24 (time wasted, lol) anyway working fine - thanks again for your assistance on this one.
