Basically their partner Exchange server for Unity will need integrating into the existing e-mail system (whether it's Lotus Notes or Exchange)
It's a bit long winded to explain but I've attached a document explaining the installation procedure:
Installation Guide for Cisco Unity Release 5.x in a Unified Messaging Configuration with MS Exchange:
Installation Guide for Integration with Lotus Notes:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/unity/5x/installation/guide/domfo/5xcuigdfox.html
Hope this helps, good luck!

That is UM, (Unified Messaging), I no longer work with unity since 4.x but in those times we used to license UM for email access and we also had IMAP license so we can connect as well in case Email server was differente you can get more info in Unity forum
