Silly Unity Upgrade (DiRT) password question

I see the note in DiRT:

NOTE: In 4.1(1) and later, the passwords entered during the password hardening wizard on the new installation (the one you will be restoring over) are used for ALL subscriber templates that are restored. This is to ensure that passwords which may not have been "hard" on the backed up system do not cause failures in the AD/Exchange account creation process during restore.

I just want to clarify with someone who's done this, does this change only the subscriber TEMPLATES as it says, or do subscribers need to be notified that their password will be reset to force them to enter one that meets the new requirements?

I have used dirt many times in the past but not recently cause there are other options.

If I remember right only new subscribers are affected cause they use the new passwords.

There are many things that can go wrong or not as planed with DiRT backup and restores.

I would reccomend testing if you can before doing this for real.
