CiscoWorks LMS 3.1 Unable to use Topology Services from remote client

On two out of the three LMS 3.1 installations I have done recently, Topology Services will run locally on the server but not remotely from a client on the same LAN. I get "Unknown Error... - Unable to connect to ANI server" The client can be W2K or XP running IE6/IE7/Firefox but it always fails. Wireshark shows only connections to tcp 1741 before the java error message. Nothing untoward is seen in the apache error.log file.

Please post the output of the Java Web Start console.

No need to post the data! The answer leapt out at me as soon as I looked at the console. Whereas I had connected to CiscoWorks in IE using a simple hostname (http://netman:1741), the applet was trying to connect using a FQDN based on the domain name configured on the server. But who puts lab servers in their DNS? I created local hosts entries on the client for both the simple and FQDN and the connection worked. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction (no doubt this is in the manual somewhere!).
