Good Day All,

I have a switch in a stack that is no longer providing power to IP phones.

The ports are all configured correctly.

A debug ilpower events shows the following error.

sbs-qu-l4-sws01#

Oct 13 14:16:45.544 WST: %ILPOWER-3-CONTROLLER_PORT_ERR: Controller port error, Interface Gi5/0/1: Power given,

but Power Controller does not report Power Good (sbs-qu-l4-sws01-5)

Any ideas at all?

thanks very much for any help.

Regards,

Amanda

Hi,

It sounds like you are running into this bug. Can you tell me what version of code you are using on the switches.

CSCed09484 Bug Details

Connecting type-1 patch cable should err-disable, not ilpower error

Symptom:

When a type-1 token ring patch cable is connected to a Power over Ethernet

(PoE)port the following syslog messages are displayed every 10 seconds:

00:01:06: %ILPOWER-7-DETECT: Interface Fa1/0/1: Power Device detected: Cisco PD

00:01:06: %ILPOWER-5-POWER_GRANTED: Interface Fa1/0/1: Power granted

00:01:06: %ILPOWER-3-CONTROLLER_PORT_ERR: Controller port error,

Interface Fa1/0/1: Power Controller reports power Tstart error detected

Condition:

This may happen on 3750-24P, 3750-48P, 3560-24, or 3560-48.

The PoE controller detects the patch cable as a Cisco pre-standard power

device. PoE is applied to the port and then an error is detected. The port

does not link-up with the patch cable and therefore does not go into loopback

or err-disable state.

The behavior should match non-PoE ports, which breifly link-up and then

quickly detect a loopback condition and place the port into err-disable

state.

Workaround:

None. The port will operate normally, without user intervention, when a valid

link partner is connected

Hi Tim and thank you for your input,

I don't think I am seeing that particular bug.

I have a 3750 PoE switch running 12.2(37) SE1.

There are four other switches in the switch stack and many more switches on our network running this code without this fault.

Hi Amanda,

What model of switches are you using?

Hi Glenn,

I have a 3750 24 port PoE switch with 12.2(37) ip K9 IOS on it.

The switch actually has five phones attached to it with power, but any new ports will not get power. Just keep getting the same strange error about the controller.

amanda

Hi Amanda,

I suspect this may be a faulty switch then? Have you isolated it from the switch stack (try it from another power supply) to see if it works any better?

Regards,

Tim

Hi Tim,

Thanks for that.

I am with you.

I will ask for a change control to swap it out and see if it is any better then.

regards,

amanda
