You do not need to turn off the switch. The 6500 supports OIR (Online Insertion & Removal) and for that price it should :)
You should be fine with this.

Further to the good information by Jon, don't too concerned if you notice that the diag light remains red for some time, it does take a while for the card to boot and complete POST.
If you connect via console when you insert the module, you should the POST message logged to the console when completed and the status should change to Green.
Incidentally all ports will be disbled.

You mean you don't trust us :-)
If it is a critical switch i would still do it out of key production hours.

Do you know if there is a technical document to see that?
Thanks for answer

Hi Jon I have another issue, I try to add the new switch card WS-X6724-SFP, but it send the error " failed to come online".
I try to add in slot 1 and then in slot 7 but the same error in both slots, the switch is the 6509 with CatOs 8.x.
10-20-2008 06:13 AM
I suspect that you are running into either of these two issues depending your CatOS version:-
â¢The WS-X6724-SFP modules are not recognized correctly on the Catalyst 6500 series switch. For this reason, the recommended supervisior engine software release is as follows:
-For the 24-port Gigabit Ethernet switching module hardware version 2.2 and earlier versions, the recommended supervisor engine software release is 8.1(2). (CSCee30191)
-For the 24-port Gigabit Ethernet switching module hardware version 2.3 and later versions, the recommended supervisor software release is 8.3(3). (CSCee30191)
This information was taken from the following Release 8.x release notes:-
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst6500/catos/8.x/release/notes/OL_4498.html
Hope this helps

Is there any other information or events that have been logged after you attempted the OIR? Such as that indicated in the bug note below?
Below is the details of the software defect mentioned earlier. It states the Hardware revision 2.3 or later is affected, and the version indicated on your module is 3.1. Apparently this defect is resolved in 8.3.3.
WS-X6724-SFP in other or PwrDown state at bootup
Problem/Symptom:
Certain HW revision (HW rev 2.3 or above as seen in 'show module') of the
6724-SFP modules may not be recognized by:
CatOS 8.3(2)and below
IOS 12.2(17d)SXB and below
Background:
Due to a missing firmware update, newer HW rev linecard was not recognized.
In 'show module' the status of the module could be 'other' or 'PwrDown' as
shown below (from IOS).
