3548 switch routing prob

Hi everybody,

I have 3548 switch on that i created 2 vlans ( vlan 10 & vlan 20 ) i want to communicate these vlans so please tell me how to configure this one or any technical document.

Prob:- when i am giving the ip routing command switch is giving one error message that is this ios image is not support, but i am using latest IOS image (c3500xl-c3h2s-mz.120-5.WC17.bin).

Hi Hari,

This switch is L2 only and you cannot enable IP Routing. You can create L2 Vlans but you can only have 1 L3 interface for management purposes. You need a Router to connect to this switch and then run L3 SVIs on the router if you want to run Vlans. This solution is called Router-on-a-stick.

Alternatively you can go for Cisco 3550, 3560 or 3750 etc to run Intervaln/IP routing.

I am sorry to say 3548 switches are not capable to run L3 routing.

Further to the good information by Shaheen, unfortunately the the Catalyst 2900XL/3500XL/2940/2950/2970 series switches are all Layer 2 switches, and are not capable of routing or communicating between the VLANs.
