beginner: software to get started in IP phones

Answered Question
Oct 29th, 2008

I have a Cisco 2651XM router and I want to start playing with ip phones and learning about voip telephone systems. What software do I need that will be compatible with my router to get me started? I have the c2600-ipvoicek9-mz.124-4.T1.bin IOS so I expect I'll have to load that. I've read about Cisco unified communications and also Cisco Call manager but don't know if this is compatible with my router or whether I need an earlier version. I'm also going to buy 2 or 3 cisco ip phones and I'd appreciate advice as to what models I should go for, based on my router and IOS. Thanks for any pointers.

I have this problem too.

CUCM not compatible as it needs MCS server, but you can have a CUCME on that router

you can only go as far as 4.1 version with that router model you have

you can check compatibility on this link:

Cisco Unified CME and Cisco IOS Software Version Compatibility Matrix

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucme/requirements/guide/33matrix.htm

config can be found here:

Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express System Administrator Guide

Hi Tiny,

Just to add to the excellent information from Jaime, I would like to explain what's required for your IP phones so that you can play around with htem.

In any telephony system you need a device which can do call routing for voice calls, just like what your router does for communications between two PC, over the same LAN or over WAN.

The system is called PBX - can be regular digital PBX or IP PBX.

Now as far as Cisco IP Phones are concerned you need to have IP PBX which is available in form of CallManager and CallManager Express.

CallManager is a software applications which sits on a server while Express sits on the router.

You can have a CallManager Express installed in the router which will register the IP Phones and can do call routing.

ok thanks for your response sushi. I think CM Express would be better for me as I want something that loads into the router and controls the phones independently of any computer.
