new routers come with default username/password: cisco or Cisco...

old routers has no usename/password in console.

to know if username/password are configured in console or in vty, look for command "login".

it could be login local (using local username/password configured in device), or no login (no need for username/pass)...

just think to encrypt password using global command:service password-encryption.

the vtys or console could also be configured with just a password on them, so also look for that. You will not be able to remote manage the router until you set up some sort of user or password method for the vty.

to set up a user:

username cisco privilege 15 secret cisco

username of cisco, password of cisco(but it's encrypted when you show run), and the highest privilege level.

on vty 0 4(optionally on con 0 and aux 0):

login local

Once you put an ip on an interface you should be able to log in.
