Is there a way I can upgrade PIX 515E from PIX 7.0(4) image to ASA 7.2(4) image?

Yes this is perfectly possible. You can go straight from 7.0 to 7.2 software versions -

Will the original configuration file remain intact after I reload the PIX with the new ASA image?

Yes.

But, I would highly recommend that you save a copy of the configuration before you do any kind of upgrade/downgrade.
