RSPAN to monitor traffic

I would like to create a vlan for rspan type traffic is there anything special I need to declare in the vlan?

All the information I have seen also just talks about switches will I be able to go through a router with the traffic to my destination switch and port?

I also seen in some books that the vtp type is set to transparent is this needed?

Any good links to any information would be greatly appreciated.

You don't say which device you are looking to configure it on.

RSPAN will not work across a routed network so all your switches need to be interconnected via L2 trunks. If you need to SPAN across a L3 network some switches like the 6500 support ERSPAN.

Attached is a link to configuring SPAN/RSPAN/ERSPAN on 6500 and in the restrictions it does not say you have to be in VTP transparent mode.

I have a 4006 that I will most likely plug into, but I alot of remote connections on the other side of T-1's.. etc..

but as already said RSPAN will only work across L2 links.

This is what you need to do for rspan vlan.

SW1(config)#vlan 100

SW1(config-vlan)#remote-span

SW1(config-vlan)#end

But the rspan vlan traffic has to be in the interconnected switches and not through any Router in between.
