discontigious network issues with routing protocols

Hi all, I have read many times that if we have 2 commons ip networks seperated by another network, and use auto summary, it will try to load balance between either side? how come if we kept the same common network between them it would be ok, it it because it assumes the same subnet mask for all networks? if so how could Im gathering even auto summarary wouldnt work if the mask was say 255.0.0.0 everywhere as this means there would be the same network between all routers in which case would be overlapping? im gathering it woould only work when using say /24 masks in reality?

Discontigious subnets are problem with classful routing protocols (RIP ver 1). Please read classful routing.

Auto summarisation summarises a subnet to the nearest major network. So if you have mask of 255.0.0.0 everywhere, the network ID becomes the first octet and it will be unique for the all data links, hence there wont be any overlapping as such.
