The direct upgrade from CUCM 4.x is possible with the DMA (Data Migration Assistant) tool.

DMA migrates data for Cisco Unified Communications Manager and Cisco Emergency Responder, as specified in the following sections.

DMA assists you with the first step in migrating Cisco Unified Communications Manager data from supported versions of 4.x to Cisco Unified Communications Manager 6.1(2) by exporting this data in a format that Cisco Unified Communications Manager 6.1(2) can read

The above is taken from this document:-

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/dma/6_1_2/dmaug612.html

For supported Cisco Unified Communications Manager Upgrades for Release 6.x and Release 7.x take a look at this doc:-

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/compat/ccmcompmatr.html#wp40524

Hope this helps.

Allan.

Hi Rachel,

Just to add a note to the great tips from my friend Allan (+5 points for this Allan :)

You will need to be at CCM 4.2(3) to use the DMA Tool to migrate the data from 4.x to 6.x;

Check out the compatibility here;

Table 4;

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/compat/ccmcompmatr.html#wp1533139

The DMA Tool is available for download via CCO Software Downloads;

Obtaining DMA

If you do not have DMA software on a disk, perform the following steps to download it to the Cisco Unified Communications Manager publisher server. Only a registered user of Cisco.com can download this software.

Procedure

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 1 Go to this URL:

http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/callmgr-61

Step 2 Select DMA file.

Step 3 Follow the prompts and provide the required information to download the software.

This is the actual download link;

http://tools.cisco.com/support/downloads/go/PlatformList.x?sftType=Unified+Communications+Manager+Data+Migration+Assistant&mdfid=281023410&treeName=Voice+and+Unified+Communications&mdfLevel=Software%20Version/Option&url=null&modelName=Cisco+Unified+C...

Via these steps from the Software download site

Voice and Unified Communications > Cisco Unified Communications Manager Version 6.1 > Unified Communications Manager Data Migration Assistant > 6.1(2)

Hope this helps!

Rob

Hi Alan

I have read the document, it says that

"You must install and run DMA on the Cisco Unified Communications Manager publisher server before you upgrade to Cisco Unified Communications Manager 6.1(2). "

However I have already installed the unified communication manager 6.1(2) ... so does that mean i have to rebuild it from scatch using the DMA ?

Thanks

kind regards

Rachel

Hi Rachel,

Great question! Sadly you will need to re-build to new box choosing the Widows migration option :(

Even with the new build of CCM 6.x on a new box you can choose the Windows Migration option using the Data Migration Assistant (DMA). Just run the DMA on the old CCM 4.2(3) before you start and it will produce a .tar file that can be used to move the data across to the new version;

Import Windows Data

This option allows you to import database information from a Cisco Unified Communications Manager 4.x system by using a file that the Data Migration Assistant (DMA) tool produces.

Upgrading the First Cisco Unified Communications Manager Node

When you choose Windows Upgrade, the installation wizard prompts you for the location of the preexisting Windows configuration information that the Data Migration Assistant (DMA) tool created. See the Data Migration Assistant User Guide for more information on the DMA tool.

Step 1 - In the Windows Upgrade window, import data from a Windows version of Cisco Unified Communications Manager by choosing Yes

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/upgrade/6_1_1/upgrd611-pdf.pdf

Hope this helps!

Rob

Hi Rachel,

Thanks for answering this one Rob, on the ball as always. (+5 points)

Probably not the advice you were looking for Rachel :(, but unfortunately as Rob has highlighted the Windows migration option is only possible during the upgrade or new installation.

Best regards

Allan.

Hi Alan,

Thanks so much again!!! :)

One other thing to mention. Is it possible to remove one of your disk mirrors from your existing Publisher in order to replicate the Publisher on another server?

The reason for this, is that it will enable you to run DMA during normal hours without affecting your Production Publisher, otherwise you will have run the DMA OOH I'm afraid.

Hope this helps.

Allan.
