difference between cisco 1841 and asa 5510

Hi all. My company has many regional sites around the world. Normally for a new site we would set up a router(cisco 1841) which is directly connected to isp. On the other end of the 1841, it would be connected to asa5510. Behind the 5510, would be the office network. Right now, my company would like to cut costs and i am thinking of removing the asa5510, hence the office network would sit directly behind my 1841. Hence is there any significant difference between 1841 and asa5510 in terms of firewall function? I understand 1841 can configure accesslists as well as vpn so that my headquarters personnel can vpn into regional sites. Is 1841 stateful? Thks in advance.

Hello,

Cisco 1841 with Cisco IOS firewall solution is a software based solution vis-a-vis 5510 which has hardware based dedicated inspection engine for various services. The funcationality of 5510 in terms for scalability, features and solution requirements would be more as in comparison to 1841 router.

On the other hand if you are looking for a branch site deployement 1841 with IOS firewall featureset and IOS IPS funcationlity should suffice the requirement, limited though. You can have a good solution designed using Cisco IOS firewall featurests for a small requirement.
