Is it possible to set up a kron job on IOS routers and switches to copy the running config back to a tftpserver at scheduled intervals? Have been reading the kron config docs and its not clear to me what commands you can and cannot use. If so what would be the syntax you would use in the policy list ?

Glen,
This is possible, as I have tested it, but never put it into production. The command I had scheduled to run was:
show run | redirect tftp://1.2.3.4/test.cfg
