IPv6 Routing Assistance

greg.bessette

I am trying to setup a test IPv6 network. Currently I have built a VMware infrastructure that can handle both IPv4 and IPv6 traffic. I have connected a physical port from the ESX server to begin connecting real world devices. I am trying to implement IPv6 routing on a Cisco 1812 series router. The IOS version is C181X-ADVIPSERVICESK9-M), version 12.4(6)T8. So far I am able to route IPv4 packets across this mixed network of IPv4 and IPv6. I have followed a multitude of directions to get IPv6 working to no avail. Attached is the network topology and the current running configuration from the router.

The router would be placed in between the virtual and physical networks.

Is there someone who could peruse the documents and let me know where I am going wrong?

Thanks for any assistance

Greg

Please move if I placed in the wrong forum section.

Hello Greg,

usually on lan interface eui-64 formats are used:

Example:

ipv6 unicast-routing

interface ethernet 0

ipv6 address 2001:0DB8:c18:1::/64 eui-64

I have some doubts on you FE0 config:

interface FastEthernet0

ip address 10.0.3.2 255.255.255.0

duplex auto

speed auto

>>>ipv6 address autoconfig

ipv6 rip process1 enable

!

I would change it with the appropriare eui-64 address.

There is someone that can give an IPv6 address to the router ?

ipv6 address autoconfig

To enable automatic configuration of IPv6 addresses using stateless autoconfiguration on an interface and enable IPv6 processing on the interface, use the ipv6 address autoconfig command in interface configuration mode. Addresses are configured depending on the prefixes received in Router Advertisement messages. To remove the address from the interface, use the no form of this command.

Hope to help

I noticed your running RIPv2. I don believe it works with RIP 1 or 2....I think you need what is called RIPng (New Generation). I will see if I can find where that is stated.

Thanks so far.....I am going to make the modifications specified and will let you know.

I am placing my updated router config. I am still not able to RIP over IPv6. If I run a packet capture on FA1, I can see RIPng responses from the router interface. On FA0, I see nothing from the packet capture.

Thanks for any continued assistance.

Hello Greg,

I see you are using EUI-64 ip addresses now.

I think the following static routes are not needed:

ipv6 route 2001:DB:0:3::/64 FastEthernet0

ipv6 route 2001:DB:0:4::/64 FastEthernet1

these are exactly the ipv6 subnets out those interfaces.

the same applies for ipv4 :

ip route 10.0.3.0 255.255.255.0 FastEthernet0

ip route 10.0.4.0 255.255.255.0 FastEthernet1

!

Do you see RIP (for ipv4 frames ) on both interfaces ?

Hope to help

Giuseppe

I currently see rip for ipv4 frames on both sides. I can route with no problem using IPv4 after I pulled the static routes as you suggested. IPv6 still does not work.

Thanks

Greg

Here is some additional information. I run the sh ipv6 rip 6route database and I get the following:

IPv6_Router1#sh ipv6 rip 6route database

RIP process "6route", local RIB

For sh ipv6 route, I get the following:

IPv6_Router1#sh ipv6 route

Let me know if there is any other information that you may need.

Greg,

Even if you don't receive any routes from your neighbor, you should at least see the local routes in the rip database. Can you provide a "show ipv6 proto", "show ipv6 int fa0" and "show ipv6 int fa1".

Greg,

Everything looks good except that the RIP database is empty. I would try to upgrade to a more recent image in the 12.4T train.

I am going to fire up the second router that I have and see if there may be a hardware issue with this router. I am at a complete loss.

Hopefully I missed something in the config.

Thanks again

Greg

I am now starting to receive this error message. I am try to locate what this error means.

*Dec 1 16:37:19.163: %IPV6_ND-3-CONFLICT: Router FE80::250:56FF:FEAD:1B3E on Fa

Greg,

This message should not prevent the router from receiving the RIP routes. Can you do a "show ipv6 rip" and run a "debug ipv6 rip".
