jumbo frames

if a vlan is configured for jumbo frames, is there any problems or performance issues if a workstation/server that is on that vlan sending packets and is not configured for jumbo frames?

hello Gabe,

the Pc will be unable to reiceve frames bigger then standard MTU but it will not create any problem in tramsmitting its own standard frames

This can be acceptable or not depending on what the PC does and the amount of jumbo frames on the Vlan.

thank you. would the same apply to routing as well? 3750 switch with a vlan that would need to be routed through the router. the router would have to be configured for jumbo frames? would that affect any routing/performance/connectivity issues? thank you!

Hello Gabe,

if the router isn't configured to support jumbo frames from other subnets no one can send frames bigger then standard MTU to the Vlan.

But in some cases this can be the desired effect if you want to confine jumbo frames in the vlan.

If the C3750 is a L3 device a mismatch in MTU can cause problems in setting up adjacencies to the router with some protocol for example OSPF.
