Solarwind Network Performance Monitoring

Unanswered Question
Nov 24th, 2008

Currently I am running NMIS, Nagios, smokeping,

smokeping APP, RANCID, MRTG, tacacs+ on an

IBM x3650 dual quad-core processors with

10GB RAM. This box is managing about 300

devices (routers, switches, firewalls,

wireless, etc...) This box is running

fine for the past 12 months. The performance on the box is exceptional

Now management want to switch over to Solarwind. I installed Solarwind NPM,

Application monitoring and Network

Compliance on a Windows 2003 Enterprise

with Service Pack 2 on a dual quad-core

processors with 12GB of RAM. I use

Solarwind to manage the same number of

devices.

The issue is that the performance of

solarwind is very slow. The CPU on the

server reaches almost 99% utilization and

it takes a long time to add devices into

Solarwind.

Question for folks who use Solarwind in

a production environment. How many network devices can a dual quad-core

processors with 10GB RAM running

Solarwind NPM, Application monitor and

NCM manage? Look like the solarwind box

can not handle all the features I have on

the freeware box

Thanks in advance.
