Is it possible to upgrade an ASA5510 in any other manner than via TFTP, i.e. XMODEM or compact flash?

You can use FTP. Doesn't make sense they don't support SCP/SFTP yet, but it's probably coming.

so it has to be something over IP? I am trying to do this remotely at a customer site and the only access I have to the ASA is via dial-up to the console port.

Technically XMODEM isn't, but IP is your only other option.
