Quick question. We are trying to bring up a this type of card:
WIC/VIC/HWIC Slot 3:
3G WWAN HWIC-EVDO Rev A/Rel 0/1xRTT-800/1900MHz
First time for us, something one of our clients is trying out, but we have not used before. Do we need him ti purchase a SIM card to go with it?

Sprint is CDMA technology, which doesn't use SIM chips. .
Have you contacted Sprint about service plan and provision this on their network? I would also verify the location you plan to use this has EVDO RevA coverage from Sprint. You don't want 1xRTT it's too slow! Sprint needs the ESN (Electronic Serial Number) to active it. I would verify you have the right model for Sprint (HWIC-3G-CDMA-S) versus Verizon.

I havnen't done the CLI config on one of these but the notes talk about activating from CLI.
I've used the Sprint Linksys version of this in Puerto Rico last New Years for a project. Worked very well under EVDO.

Unfortunately this thing is the middle of a large steel frame warehouse with metallic siding from my understanding. Here is the show radio:
1xRTT related info
------------------
Current RSSI = -78 dBm, ECIO = -3 dBm
Current Channel Number = 384
Current Channel State = Acquired
Current Band Class = Band Class 0
HDR (1xEVDO) related info
-------------------------
Current RSSI = -125 dBm, ECIO = -2 dBm
Current Channel Number = 1150
Current Band Class = Band Class 1
Sector ID (Hex) = 0084:0AC0:0000:0001:300A:051A:A800:1603
Subnet Mask = 70, Color Code = 116, PN Offset = 426
Rx gain control(Main) = Unavailable, Diversity = Unavailable
Tx total power = 16 dBm, Tx gain adjust = 3072 dBm
Carrier to interference (C/I) ratio = 2
The EVDO will never go below -110 when the card does its channel scanning. 1xRTT is the best we can get.
