6509 Redundancy Test

Hi experts! I have a Switch Cisco WS-C6509-NEB-A and I need to do some test to proof redundancy between slots with the same kind of cards. I have 2 WS-SUP720-3B, 2 WS-X6516A-GBIC and 2 WS-X6148A-GE-TX:

I have to take off one card (i.e. slot 1) and verify that the other (i.e. slot 2) can replace without problems. I have some doubts:

1.- What is the command to shutdown one slot?

2.- Can I take off one card without to shutdown it?

3.- What is the right process to take one card off? (I saw a lot of manuals but there are not specific commands.

4.- How can I test the hot-swap capability?

1) Some of the service modules actually have "shutdown" options but for the ethernet modules you can use the "power enable" command -

2) Yes you can

3) Not sure what you mean by take one card off

4) Pull one of the ethernet modules out and then plug it back in. 6500 supports OIR (Online Insertion Removal).

Note if this is testing i would still do it out of core production hours.

Thanks John! "Power enable" does work with optical and electrical modules. The redundancy really works =D

You should have any problems performing the redundancy tests.

1. you can use the following command to shut down a card. Replace the X with the slot number on the chassis.

Switch# hw-module module X shutdown

Switch# no power enable module X

to turn the card back on use the command below.

Switch# power enable module X

2. Yes you can remove a module from the chassis while powered up.

3. Not sure what you mean on this question.

4. You can test this by removing and adding a module to the chassis.
