assigning a secondary IP address on an int

Does a secondary address on an interface have to be in the same subnet as the primary?

Not 100% positive, but the converse might be true. I.e. that a secondary isn't allowed in the same subnet as the primary.

I don't think it is possible to configure a secondary IP on the same subnet on an interface. I have never tested this, but I know it's not possible to configure two interfaces on the same subnet on the same router.

Correction: I just tested this and it does work having a secondary IP on the same subnet.

Hi,

No, it is not a requirement to have the secondary address to be in the same subnet as the primary.

AFAIK, early releases of IOS did not even support configuring Primary and Secondary address to be in the same subnet. But, with later release, this configuration is possible.
