i have a question for a class project. we are bidding for a contract for a privately owned company in Spokane Washington. The company will be expanding to four more locations and hiring additional employees-sydney, australia (1500 employees); san juan, puerto rico (780); virginia beach, va(2800); and honolulu, hi (1358).

can someone tell me what cisco router would support the number of workstation at each site? also at best price.

fyi. as far as software, sydney employees will be using red hat/fedora linux servers and fedora clients, san juan and virginia beach employees will be using windows 2003 server w/windows xp clients, and honolulu employees will be using redhat/fedora linux servers w/windows xp and fedora clients.

Hello David,

you need to think on deploying a structured campus network with

access layer (L2 switches)

distribution layer (multilayer switches)

WAN router

you could use

C3750 at access-layer or C4500

distribution

C4500 or C6500

WAN

if you use C6500 you could have the WAN router to be the same as distribution

or

you can think of a C3845 or 7206 given the number of users

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Thanks Giuseppe.

Number of users doesn't really tell us much beyond perhaps number of wall jacks, assuming network hosts will be wired. You really need to know what the expected network load for these users are and where the network load will be be.

You note the different OS types of servers and clients, but nothing about the applications that they will be running. You note servers and clients at each location, but does this mean practically all network traffic will remain within the site, or will these servers and/or clients communicate with off-site servers and clients?

There's the issue of network security. Will the network only just provide transport, or must it secure network segments, secure network user access, determine and control traffic between parts of the network?

I realize this is a "class project", but I'm trying to convey you need to know much more about what the network must support, both relative to load and features, before you begin selecting equipment. (This is one reason why there's so many switches and routers in the Cisco product line.) Once you know what must be provided, you can select the equipment to provide it and at the minimal cost for that level of support.

hi josheph. first of all thanks for responding. the application software for each site will be CAD program, office productivity software(2007), e-mail services/clients, and web services.

As far as network traffic goes, all traffic shoulb ve able to reach Spokane, the home office. traffic between sites directly is not required.

as far as network security, we do want to secure network segments and user access.
