Hi all
Would it be possible to put a next hop for a default route to somewhere on another network? or am I right in thinking that the device would never get there as the next hop is not directly connected, is this called recursive routing ?

It is indeed possible to configure any route to a non-directly connected NH. And yes that would be called a recursive route.

R1 10.1.1.1 - 10.1.1.2 R2 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.2 R3
On R1:
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.2
ip route 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 10.1.1.2
So, the default route is pointing to 192.168.1.2 on R3. But to reach 192.168.1.0/24, R1 needs to route to R2.
