What does it take to upgrade a 3550 from SMI to EMI and is it possible?

I don't think so - why would you need a bigger flash? The EMI image will fit in your current flash space. The SMI image will be removed during the upgrade.

Technically, it's just a software update. Legally, you must purchase the upgrade via a Cisco Reseller.

Glen,

You are absolutely right, the following link:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps646/prod_end-of-life_notice0900aecd8029f777.html

states May 2007 is the cut-off date for Software Release.

With that said, 12.2(46)SE was released not to long ago:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3550/software/release/12.2_46_se/release/notes/OL16493.html

Thus, I'm not sure what that business unit's plan really is..
