- When Cisco says that its IOS supports many different WAN protocols in disparate systems, what does this mean exactly? Do the WANs talk to each other at the Data Link Layer of the OSI model? Do they participate at the Network Access Layer of the TCP/IP model? Do they only read information up to layer 2 in a packet, which means only a frame?

When Cisco says that IOS supports many different WAN protocols it is talking about support for protocols like: HDLC, PPP, Frame Relay, ATM, ADSL, PPPoE. Whatever type of WAN protocol is used in the WAN that you may want to connect to is probably supported in IOS.
