<URGENT> how to configure modem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answered Question
Dec 24th, 2008

CCM---MGCP---ISR(VG)

CCM---SCCP---VG224 (ios12.4.15)

The analog phone is ok.

I want to configure modem passthrough or relay, but I don't know how to setup.

The only document i can find in cisco is that to configure below cli in vg224

'voice service voip

modem relay nse codec g711ulaw gw-controlled'

WHat should i do in ISR and CCM to support modem passthrough or relay?

I have this problem too.

Modem passthrough and fax passthrough use the same set of commands. They are the ones I posted earlier:

On SCCP:

voice service voip

modem passthrough nse codec g711u

fax protocol none

On MGCP:

mgcp modem passthrough voip mode nse

mgcp modem passthrough voip codec g711ulaw

no ccm fax protocol cisco

If you implement these commands instead of the relay command you've configured, both faxes and modems should work. This should be the easiest configuration to get both faxes and modems to work as long as there are no tight bandwidth constraints or 3rd party fax server support.

With MGCP relay is on by default. I would strongly discourage from using SCCP for faxes and modems on the VG224 and use either MGCP or H323 instead. SCCP does not handle faxes very well.

Modem passthrough:

On SCCP:

voice service voip

modem passthrough nse codec g711u

fax protocol none

On MGCP:

mgcp modem passthrough voip mode nse

mgcp modem passthrough voip codec g711ulaw

no ccm fax protocol cisco

Also - make sure your T1's don't have any slips with 'show controllers t1'.

Thanks nick.

I used below way:

On VG224 SCCP:

voice service voip

modem relay nse codec g711ulaw gw-controlled

On MGCP:

mgcp modem relay voip mode nse redundancy gw-controlled

Modem is fine by this configution, but Fax on vg224 doesn't work.

what should I do next?

zhangjianping Wed, 12/24/2008 - 23:48

and i don't setup any fax related parameters in both MGCP GW(vg224) and SCCP GW (vg224).

I only use the default ones for fax

zhangjianping Thu, 12/25/2008 - 00:48

Per checked, fax using cisco protocol in both MGCP GW and SCCP GW,

Now the issue is , the 2 fax machines on VG224 can succeed to fax to each other with the whole number (not just useing the extension number), and the fax machine can send out the fax, but failed to receive.

Pls help.

Thanks nick.

I have made it by using t.38 fax relay, since cisco fax relay is not supported by VWIC card.

Anyway, thank you for ur help
