c2600 Platform

I bought a 2600 router and the int fa0/0 does not work. I get connect link light when plugged into another port but it isn't seen from cdp on the switch. As I investigated into the problem on the show version it says the platform is a 2600. Is there such a thing ... I thought it 2600 was the family and they were broken out by the last two digits ... such as 2610, 2612, 2620, 2650, and 2691?

Before I open it up and do the obvious physical checkout of the interface, can y'all check the CLI for anything obvious?

Thanks,

Richard

Sorry...forgot about that. Can you update the IOS? If you can I would try that and get it for the 2650. I will check out a couple other things.

Richard,

Post the show diag output.

Edison.

Edison,

Everytime I boot the router up the following message is displayed which is one I have never seen.

00:00:003: %LINK-4-MOMAC: A random default MAC address of 000.0c83.eded has been chosen. Ensure that this address is unique, or specify MAC addresses for commands (such as 'novell routing') that allow the use of this address as a default.

The router diag shows nothing ...

Trying to think of ways to use a router that has no working interfaces. I guess I could use it to make sure all the other 2600's are the right size.

Richard

From several things, especially from the fact that the show version does not indicate the presence of any interfaces I am guessing that the image that you are running is not the correct image for this piece of hardware. Perhaps you have a 2600XM and are running software for 2600 (or have a 2600 and are running software for 2600XM). Perhaps if you would post the complete set of messages when the router boots it might give us some insight about the problem.

What interface cards do you have installed in the chassis? Also on the back by the power switch there should be a sticker that goes around the AUX, Console, and FastEthernet ports, on that sticker it should tell you the model number.

Mike

Mike,

Learn something new everyday ... never ever noticed that sticker before on any routers. It is a 2650 and there are no interfaces installed (no modules) other than the platform standard fa, con, and aux.

Thanks,

Richard

That is why you do not see any interfaces....there are not any installed. You will need to get a module installed to connect them up.

Mike

Mike,

The router has a fastethernet port that is standard for all 2600 platforms. There are no 'modules' installed on the router. The fastethernet port is not in the CLI ... that is the problem I am trying to fix. Unless I am misunderstanding you, the port is standard to the platform and is not a module.

Richard

Sorry...forgot about that. Can you update the IOS? If you can I would try that and get it for the 2650. I will check out a couple other things.

Mike

Mike,

I would but I don't have access to cisco downloads and don't have a 2650 IOS. I have to wait until after the holidays to try and get it from work.

Richard

Can you run show tech on the router and post it.

Mike

Richard,

With the help of Rick and Mike, I was able to determine that you are indeed running the wrong code for a 2650.

2650 support started with 12.1(T) and you are running 12.1(Mainline).

You have limited DRAM (48) but you should be able to load this code in your router:

c2600-i-mz.123-26.bin

HTH,

__

Edison.

Edison,

Thanks. How exactly did you deduce that ... just so I can understand that in the future. All I was able to do was go to the cisco download site and look for the IOS I have in the router now but couldn't find it. I wasn't really able to tell if it was wrong or not. Is there something in the router output that points to that?

Richard

Richard,

Part of your Cisco learning should include mastering the Release Notes as well as the Feature Navigator :)

I went to the Cisco Feature Navigator and noticed there weren't 12.1(M) IOS available for 2650, then I double-checked my suspicious by going to the Release Notes on 12.1 and 12.2.
