Router selection for NxT-1 Internet

Hello, I have an existing customer with a single T-1 Internet connection terminated in a Cisco 1700 router. THey are going to a 2x T-1 connection, future upgrade to 3x T-1, and are considering a new router, or a carrier-managed router (2800) with an ethernet handoff inside where they would keep the 1700 in place. Is this possible/recommended with the 1700? Or if they buy new, would you recommend 2801?

It is not possible with the 1700, it only supports two T1s. An 1841 will support 4 T1's so that should work you and of course 2800 series and up will as well (and support more T1's). Why would you be keeping the 1700?

The customer was considering a carrier-managed router which would terminate the T-1s from telco and hand off ethernet inside to the 1700. He's doing some stuff on the 1700 that the carrier (AT&T) does not allow him to do on a managed router. SO, he thought he'd keep the 1700 behind the carrier router to do his thing.

Note, I called partner support, someone there told me that the minimum 2800 needed to terminate more than 2 T-1;s was a 2811, and if he wanted to go 3xT1 he'd need a 2821. I thought the 2811 or even 2801 would support 3xT1. What are your thougts on this?

2801 supports a max of 4 T1's, the 2811 and up support many more. A 2821 is overkill, I have a 2811 with 8 T1's. The datasheet says the 2811 and up support 20 T1's!
