Access List - Wildcard or IP Subnet Mask

While defining access-lists how can I know whether Wildcard format or IP Subnet Mask format should be used.

For e.g. to refer it to 192.168.1.x network should the ACL have 0.0.0.255 or 255.255.255.0

I have seen it being used in both ways. But don't know what to use when.

On a router - you reverse mask:-

0.0.0.255 - 192.168.1.x

On a PIX/ASA - you use normal mask:-

255.255.255.0 - 192.168.1.x
