my 4510R wont automatically boot back up.....

This may be very generic question, but, i have a 4510R with 2 supervisors V , and when i reboot it, is it does not boot in to the ios, i have to type reload .... where do i start with this issue?...the config register, or the supervisors...

currently the config reg is set to 0x2101 using the following ios: cat4000-I9S-M v12.2(25)EWA4 rel. (FC1)


can you point me to documentation on how to configure supervisors?

Basically, it is due to config-register, 2101 you are telling the router to load the boot loader but this platform does not have and does not require boot loader. so, as Grant specifies, 2102 should auto load the image when you power cycle it or reload the box.


For further information on bit settings on config-register, watch for the format, I hope you can read the following:

CONFIGURATION REGISTER is stored in NVRAM (or implemented by hardware jumpers), and

specifies some router startup settings. The 16 bit register generally specifies the following:

Bits Meaning Possible Values (binary)

0-3 Boot Sequence 0000 Boot and stay in ROM Monitor

0001 Boot and load RxBoot

0010 Boot and load IOS from Flash

If valid file not found, try to boot from network Others mean same operation but diff. file name

4-5 Reserved

6 NVRAM Ignore 0 Use config in NVRAM at startup

1 Ignore config in NVRAM at startup

7 Banner 0 Don't show Cisco banner at startup

1 Show Cisco banner at startup

8 Break Disable 0 Allow break key usage

1 Disable break key usage

9 Reserved

10 Broadcast Addr 1 Use all 0s as broadcast address at Boot

11-12 Console Speed 00 9600 bps, 01 4800 bps

10 2400 bps, 11 1200 bps

13 Boot Failure 0 If no IOS found on network, just hang

Usually a register issue . 0x2101 means it will look for the first image available in bootflash and load that without a boot statement. If you change it to 0x2102 you will have to put in a specific boot statement pointing to the image that you want to use.
