We are currently running ACS server version 3.3 at a client site. We want to upgrade the ACS to version 4.2.
How can I extract the license that we used to install the old version?

You can't move one license to another, since the license you have is for 3.X and what you need is 4.x then you will need to purchase a new license for this new version, unfortunately this is a major upgrade that needs to be purchased.

Is this the same for the ACS appliance? Can you upgrade if you have smart net active?

Yes, AFAIK acs appliance requires a software contract too, smartnet, I belive, is for hardware only

You need to purchase software upgrade contract to upgrade acs to 4.2.
This is applicable to both acs windows and acs appliance.
