Hi all, i need to do some troubleshooting on my lan, Is there such a device that is battery operated what I can plug into my lan and run a simple ping to it for testing?

You can use a tool like this one-
It's nice because it supports CDP. You can go to a workstation that's having problems, plug this into the jack and it will tell you if there is anything wrong with the cable back to the switch. It will also tell you what switch and switchport you're connected to. Well worth the money.

I have the fluke net tool, is it possible to give the nettool an ip address and leave it on so I can run a ping to it ?

I don't have that tool (looks nice though). Looking at its features, it will need an IP do perform most of them. It usually does DHCP out of the box, but most of their tools (including ones below the nettool) can have static IPs. Here's a link to the manuals which should show you how to set the IP.
