802.1x standard and radius

Hi every body!

1) Does 802.1x standard require the use of radius? or we can use any other server with eap methods configured?

According to the RFC it is optional -

http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3580.txt

However all the implementations i have seen use RADIUS as the authentication server.
