Help! Two internet gateway, 1 website.

I am pretty new to network designs and would like to ask for expert's advise.

We currently have 1 Internet connection going in and out and would like to have another Internet link to another provider.

My goal is simple, If link1 goes down, link2 could handle it right away.

My concerns are the domain pointing also to that IP, or this could be solved via load balacing?

Hope you could help me.

Thanks,

Louie

Louie,

From what I gather from your post, you have a server running WWW services and you want to be able to have these services running via multiple ISP links either active/active (load balancing) or active/passive (failover).

The design depends on several requirements.

Do you own the Public IP address or the IP address is owned by ISP on link 1?

If owned by the ISP, you need to get the 2nd link from the same ISP and they are the only one allowed to route that subnet.

If owned by you, then you need to talk to the provider from both links and have them advertise this subnet for you. You can discuss with them which link will preferred and this design is often done with BGP.

You may also look at the DNS way of doing active/active sites. This solution uses Cisco GSS or some other vendor's similar product.

Thanks.
