3548xl 1000BASE-SX connect to dell Powerconnect 3024

I have a catalyst 3548xl with a 1000BASE-SX gbic module and I want to replace a failing dell Powerconnect. The problem is I am unable to connect the 3548 to the other dell with the fiber. The connection stays down and come up for a second when the dell is rebooted but then goes back down. If I place a second gbic module in the 3548 and connect it to the first one in that switch the both come up and connect yet I get nothing when connecting to either dell. Is there a change that needs to be made to one of the switches?

Not sure if fiber or GBIC on Dell side is bad.

Unplug the fiber from 3548xl switch, look at the fiber connector, can you see a red light which come from Dell switch? (you might need to turn off the room light). If not, either fiber or GBIC on DEll switch is bad. If you look at GBIC in Cisco switch, you should see the same red light as well on TX side.

It works between the two dells but it wont work with the cisco and one of the dells.

Make sure you have the same type of GBIC on both side. SX GBIC is the only one you can see "red light" from TX side of GBIC.

They are the same it works if i put both modules in the cisco but if one is in the dell they dont connect and if both are dells they connect but if i connect the cisco to a dell it wont do anything.

what's the output of "show interface gigx/y" from cisco switch?

Make sure that fiber with "red light" is connected to RX side of gbic.

Connect the fiber chord on GigabitEthernet0/1 of cisco switch and swap the TX and RX of the patch chord at the dell switch side.

Yes, this is the last thing we need to do if you believe both fiber and GBIC are good. I mentioned it in my previous post. If you unplug your fiber from switch, you can see a red light in one fiber. Make sure it is pulg in the GBIC RX side.

As for configuration, what you can try is:

1. turn off negociation on both sides

2. hard code duplex on both side.

All fiber and gbics are good and work. There are currently two dell 3024s connected with the fiber and if I try to replace one with the cisco i cant get any connection. If I place the gbic from the cisco into a dell the dells connect if I put two gbics into the cisco and connect them two each other they connect. I just cant get the cisco to talk to either dell.

Have u tried swapping the TX and RX of patch chords? when u connect the dell port to dell port the TX and TX will be matching each other.when u connect with cisco and dell there is a good chance of miss match.So swap ether cisco side or dell side RX and TX of the fiber cable.This a simple test to get some answer for the issue.

Of corse, I have tried every combo of everything.

Try, setting speed nonegotiate on the cisco end. And set the Dell to 1000 full.
