We are experiencing a problem of extermail emails with attachments going out of our domain. Emails without attachments are going without a problem. The message track details indicate delivery started, then bad connection , then message is queued to some later time. And the ironport seems to be chewing up our uplink band width. what diagnostics can I do or what parameters should I check

Could you post some exam log?
the way to solve...
set mail relay and send mail from ironport out through mail relay
- if pass and problem happened at mail relay, check sth in front of it.
- if not, chk ironport
chk via injection debug log (sth may b happen)
good luk ^^

This sound like a network duplex problem.
I think you should check if your appliance and the device it's connected to (switch/firewall etc.) ore both fixed on the highest possible, but always the same port settings. For instance configure your applicance and your switch both to 100mb/full duplex.

I've had a similar problem with incoming mails with attachments being dropped. At the end, a coincidental change of a switch in the organization cured everything.
