HUM polling not working?

Unanswered Question
Feb 6th, 2009

I am trying to set up some pulling of CPU, memory utilization and environmental polling. I have the pollers set up and used the appropriate instances, but my portlet says that there is no data to display. Trying to figure out why.

version is 1.0 and my pollers are active. I have one poller polling several differnet templates and instances. Some of them, seem to be getting info just fine, others do not.

Did the portlets ever show data available? Or have they always reported no data since defining the pollers?

jlhainy Fri, 02/06/2009 - 13:49

always reported no data since defining the pollers, for a few templates I am using, not all of them.

Joe Clarke Fri, 02/06/2009 - 13:58

How are your problem pollers defined? What templates are you using?

jlhainy Fri, 02/06/2009 - 14:06

I have one poller called core switch, I am using the cpu utilization, temp, interface utilization and memory utilization templates. I have all available instances checked.

I then have portlets set up to show top N cpu utilization, top n memory, top N interface utilization. My top n interface utilization is showing me the info, but the others say no data to display. This poller is the only one using the cpu memory & environmental temp templates so it has to be among the top N cpu because it is the only one.

ok, I just noticed that my memory utilization started showing data. Several hours after I configured the pollers. Does it just need to poll a certain amount of data before it shows results?

Joe Clarke Fri, 02/06/2009 - 19:18

The HUM portlets should start showing data after two polling cycles.

jlhainy Fri, 02/06/2009 - 19:46

that is not what is happening. Also, my memory stats disappeared and now says that there is no data to display.

The file is 7 meg in size. Each time I try to attach it, I get a time out and page cannot be displayed.

Joe Clarke Mon, 02/09/2009 - 10:44

The file is pure text. Just compress it, and you should be able to post it.

Joe Clarke Mon, 02/09/2009 - 10:56

The underlying queries are not finding any data. Go ahead, and delete your current poller, and recreate it. We've seen cases where this can get the real-time data to show up in the portlets.

jlhainy Mon, 02/09/2009 - 14:05

I deleted the poller and re-created it and I have the same result.

Enable UPMPROCESS debugging under HUM > Admin > Log Level Settings, wait for two polling cycles, and post the upm_process.log.

jlhainy Fri, 02/13/2009 - 07:12

So, under the log level settings, there is a upm process application. then under that, there are various modules that all have different logging levels. One of the modules is called UPM process. Do you want just that module set to debugging? or all of them?

Joe Clarke Fri, 02/13/2009 - 07:30

All would have been fine, but if you want to get specific, I'm really interested in Data Management and Polling Engine.

Joe Clarke Fri, 02/13/2009 - 07:47

There is no debugging enabled here at all. That said, I also don't see any errors. It makes me think that the poller is not getting back any data from the underlying devices.

Joe Clarke Fri, 02/13/2009 - 10:18

This is weird. Polling IS working, and valid data is being obtained. The calculations look right, and the utilization is coming back as non-zero. I THINK you may be seeing CSCsr83672. Please export one of your pollers to XML, and post the XML file.

Sorry, export is for templates. Please post a screenshot of your poller details.

Go to Common Services > Server > Admin > Job Browser. Look for the SUMMARIZER_JOB. When is it running? What is its status?

jlhainy Wed, 02/18/2009 - 08:39

Name: Summarizer Job

Job Type: Summarizer Job

Schedule Time: 18 Feb 2009 9 Hours 5 Min 0 Sec

Job Status: Successful

Job Failure Reason (if any): -

Completion Time: Wed Feb 18 09:05:23 MST 2009

Summarized Nos

No of Affected Records: 3397

looks like it runs every hour and is successful.

You mentioned a software bug ID. Is there a patch that I need to apply?

Joe Clarke Wed, 02/18/2009 - 10:45

I don't think you're seeing that bug. In fact, if the summarize job is running correctly, I don't see any reason why those tables would not be populated. Please post the upm_summarizer.log.

Hi jclarke.

Did you get a chance to look at the posted log files?

Joe Clarke Wed, 02/25/2009 - 13:13

Sorry, I'm on vacation, and I must have missed this one. There does appear to be a database issue trying to summarize the template data. Unfortunately, it's not clear exactly where the problem lies. At this point, it would be useful to look at your upm database to see if there is any bad data. The net result might be that you have to reinitialize this database. In any event, you should open a TAC service request to have them assist you with these steps.

jlhainy Wed, 02/25/2009 - 13:50

Good enough. I will do that. Thanks for your help though. Enjoy your vacation!
