Config serial int as well as serial controller?

I'm getting ready to start configuring on a new 3845 ISR with a NM-1T3/E3. After reviewing lots of documents as well as forum searches, I'm not sure if I have to configure the routers serial interface in addition to setting the NM-1T3/E3 card type, controller slot, framing…

You configure:

card-type (mandatory)

controller (optional, in most cases no changes to default)

interface (of course, mandatory)
