Pix515E upgrade from 6.3 to 7.2 -"no route to host"

I have a Pix with a blank running config, I can load the 7.2 from Monitor mode OK, when I try to then get the 7.2 .bin file tftp-ed to the PIX and saved in flash it gives me a "no route to host" error

Pix E1 172.23.4.125 255.255.255.0

laptop 172.23.4.124 255.255.255.0

No firewall running on the laptop, Pix can't ping its own interface or the laptop

To save the PIX Security appliance Version 7.0 image to Flash from global configuration mode, perform the following steps:

a. Copy the PIX Security appliance Version 7.0 image from the TFTP

server using the following commands. (This requires you to configure

an IP address on the security appliance interface that connects to the

TFTP server.)

PIX(config)#interface ethernet 0

PIX(config-if)# ip address 172.23.4.125 255.255.255.0

PIX(config)# copy tftp://172.23.4.124/pix724.bin flash:

the next thing I get is: "no route to host"

Any ideas???

In interface configuration mode add:

no shutdown

The interface may be down...and the route doesn't appear in the routing table.

I did a no shut on the interface, no routes in the route table but the laptop is directly connected to the interface so I didn't think that required any routes.. ??

still the same ... no route to host

Have you tried upgrading the PIX from Monitor mode?

Yes, I can get it to load and run 7.24 from monitor mode. but according to the instructions you are running from RAM and you have to then tftp the IOS again and save it to NVM ram -flash. That is when I have the problem, I can't get the PIX to connect to the laptop, I get the "no route to host" error when the laptop is directly connected to the Pix int0

From the output you included above, you are not in Monitor mode.
