Transcoding/MTP question

I always come across this question and could not find the real answer.

1. When do we need to have MTP or Transcoding resources dedicated to Callmanager cluster. I have an environment, consisting of different Callmanager clusters and Voice gateways with PSTN / PBX trunks. I have combination of codecs (regions with g711 and g729) and everything works with out Transcoding. Do not really know when do I need transcoding resources. Atleast I never had to convert G729 to G711 vice versa.

2. When is the time I need to use high complexity codec ? On the voice gateway, I can define codec complexity to either high / medium / flex. To get higher MOS score we need to use high complexity codec ?

May be dumb questions, but bothers me ..

when the devices do not have a common codec

IE UCCX. if the phone tries G729 and UCCX is configured for G711 XCODER is required

when a feature provided a high complexity codec or the actual codec itself is needed IE GSM
